1) Location: The most important thing is to select a viewpoint that gives you the best view of the canyon. Overlooks that jut out into the canyon give the best views and are the best locations to take photos. There are plenty of glorious viewpoints, scout out the areas beforehand so you know which you wish to visit.

2) Include People: Having folks in your photos give them viewpoint and interest automatically. To show to the viewer the overpowering vastness of the canyon they have to be well placed to have an idea of scale ; having a human in the picture does just that .

3) Keep Neutral Density Gradients Close: The Grand Canyon is pretty much the complete opposite of a mountain, so you need to remember as the sun descends less of the canyon is lit. For instance, as the sky becomes filled with colour from the sunset, there is little to no light in the canyon itself. Use graduation neutral-density filters to restrain highlight exposure in the sky and make allowances for bigger exposure in the shadows of the canyon.
